Happy Freelance Friday, everyone! I’m a freelancer, yes — but above all else, I view myself as a content creator. The majority of what I do for my clients is create content, and that’s not even recognizing the massive amount of content creation that goes into this blog (including twice weekly blog posts and a seven-day e-course!).
As such, I’ve learned a little thing or two about getting your content noticed around the web. Between running a successful college blog and writing daily blog posts for a number of international clients, I know what I’m doing when it comes to getting your content noticed.
But getting your content noticed by just anybody isn’t the point. You want to get your content in front of the right people — because that’s how you get noticed by audience members who will stick around long enough to become longtime readers and, eventually, customers. That’s how you get noticed by enough people that you eventually get noticed by brands, and after that can solidify high-paying brand deals to monetize your blog.
As you can tell, this isn’t my first rodeo — but it may or may not be yours. Whether you’re an experienced blogger-slash-freelancer or brand-new to the realm of content marketing, today I’m sharing five of my best tips to help you get your content noticed online.
1. Use basic SEO techniques.
Contrary to what experts like Neil Patel will have you believe, you don’t need to be an expert at hacking search engines for your content to matter to people. What you DO need, however, is at least a basic understanding of what SEO is and how you do it. Here are my quick tips on SEO for dummies so you can optimize your posts, without having to learn to speak an entirely different language:
- Use a search keyword in the title and first paragraph of your blog post.
- Choose a keyphrase with 2-3 words, as opposed to a single word, to optimize.
- Avoid “keyword stuffing,” or using your keyword over and over again in a way that sounds forced or unnatural.
- Run your headlines through the Coschedule Headline Analyzer to help optimize.
2. Cross-promote your content.
What do you do when you first post a blog? If your answer is “sit and wait for someone to read it,” you’re doing something wrong. You should be cross-promoting your content across all the social media channels you use. Don’t wait for people to come to you — push your content out into the world and invite others to read it!
3. Get yourself a Pinterest account.
If you’re not using Pinterest yet, then you’re seriously wasting a major opportunity to get your content noticed. Pinterest allows you to get a massive number of views per month, without doing much other than pin cute pics of dogs and delicious recipes to your boards. In all seriousness, there’s a bit more strategy to Pinterest than that — it has SEO like any search engine, and its algorithm can get a little complicated — but in my opinion, it’s one of the easiest social media platforms to master, and it allows you to skyrocket your views with minimal effort.
4. Choose unique topics to write about.
Writing about the same thing that everyone else is writing about might seem like a good idea at first — why mess with something that works, right? But these “trending” topics tend to get cluttered fairly quickly, which is why you have a better chance of getting noticed if instead, you focus on filling a gap. What’s something you love that you rarely see content about? That’s what you should be writing about — not the same old trend that everyone else is blogging on, but something unique to YOU!
5. Write from your heart.
Not to get too cheesy, but in my many years as a blogger and content marketer, I’ve found that authentic content gets much better views than content churned out to take advantage of a trend or current event. Your audience can sense when you are faking it — so, always write from your heart, not your head. Don’t choose topics you aren’t passionate about to blog about just because they are “trending.” Ignore the news, ignore Twitter, and focus on being true to YOU.
